On the contrary, very practical. The 50 minutes doesn't include "reserve" power (fuel) and you can do a lot in that time. For example 50 minutes at 100 knots is about 95 statute miles. Aeroplanes fly "as the crow flies" i.e. in a straight line, so that will easily take you to France... and back :)

Once upon a time, very recently, there were only a few electric cars in the country. That number has grown rapidly recently. Even the pandemic seems to have had no effect on slowing the increase. Where did you get the idea that there are only three in the UK? The CAA only records "UK Registered" aircraft. There are aircraft register in many other countries based in the UK, many aircraft registered in the USA are based here for example. High purchase price is misleading, just like when "buying" an electric car. Many of them are operated on leases. 50 minutes is pretty adequate for a lot of GA operations, btw.

@geoffrey.937 What have I said that's not factual? I've even provided a link to one of many, many companies actively pursuing the development of electric aviation. These aren't "my hopes" they are the reality, and anyone can prove this for themselves. I quite like being firmly attached to reality. It seems that is your "hopes" that are about to be dashed. Luddites held similar views I believe. It didn't end too well for them, sadly.

@Jelly tots Perception cannot be totally "correct" for everyone as such, it belongs to the individual. In that sense, perception is always correct.... for the individual. Your question isn't about perception, it's about opinion. Some people base opinions on verifiable facts of the time, and as knowledge increases, their position may change. A Scientific approach, if you will. Contrast this with opinions based on hearsay, or emotion, or irrational or uninformed data. People with opinions formed this way tend to be fixed and no amount of factual data will sway them. Religious fanaticism falls into this category. Which camp do you think I fall into?

@geoffrey.937 You have answer, your question was not specific. Not my fault. "any moment now" is open to interpretation you understand. Wherever you choose to live, country or city, inland or by the sea, everything is transient. Everything changes. That should be the expectation. It is therefore unreasonable to to expect "no changes" forever. In this case the changes are relatively minor, no-one is building another Heathrow here. It's a small grass aerodrome with a few flights a day by small ("soon" to be electric) aeroplanes.

@geoffrey.937 yes. Electric aviation is already here and will soon become the norm. Of course it depends on your definition of "soon", but as per the automotive world, soon could be just around the corner. Is farming non intrusive? No. Different crops require different mechanical cropping, so the noise levels change as per the crop. Since the dawn of mechanised farming the countryside has not been a totally quiet place. Road produce noise too. And this part of Kent isn't that remote. There are roads.

@geoffrey.937 Given the recent rapid uptake in electric vehicles, it's almost inevitable that a similar step and rapid change will happen in the light aviation world. Given the age of the light aircraft fleet (largely 50+ years) and the fact that some of them can only be run on (low) leaded fuel which will stop being manufactured at some point, there is a real interest in such technology. It's going to happen. There were many naysayers in the automotive world not so long ago, they don't say much now. Inevitably the same will happen in aviation.

@geoffrey.937 I've generally found that when people say "with respect" they actually mean the opposite. No matter. Actually, electric driven vehicles pre-date the internal combustion engine. There were several commercially available models from the 1880s. Do a Google search for "Morrison Electric" for example (there were others). In fact, by the start of the 20th century, electric cars were extremely popular – particularly in the United States, where 28% of the 4000+ cars produced in 1900 were electric. A little known company called Porsche (have you heard of them?) even unveiled a petrol / electric hybrid in 1901. Dear old Henry Ford and cheap oil put paid to further electric transport, in favour of the internal combustion engine... ... and now we have gone full circle.. ICE engines are expensive to operate and maintain. Electric motors on the other hand are cheap to operate and cost pennies to maintain. They are also very quiet. Take a look for yourself. All of this is available on line.

@Paul Osborne I've no idea where the aeroplanes that used to be at Maypole are now. I do doubt that Maypole was "popular" stopover for cross channel flights, though some people undoubtedly stopped. France isn't that far away (less than 20 mins to Calais) There's little point in an extra landing when even from the Midlands France is only just over an hour and a half away at light aircraft speeds.
